The beginning of the rest of my life

So, I suppose I ought to write a little about myself.

I'm an 18 year old aspiring polyglot (or linguist, if you prefer). I've very recently left school and completed my A Levels, two years of pain which have somehow not put me off education.

But how can this be, I hear you ask.

Simply put, I love what I do. A Levels in French and German may be the stuff of nightmares for some folk - a fact not well hidden by the look of total abject terror when I tell people I'm even doing Modern Languages at university - but despite all of this, nothing engages me quite like an obscure tense or adjectival ending.

And now I've left secondary education, I'm planning to improve my skills during my gap year, before heading to university. Yes, indeed - I am one of those people! But before you roll your eyes let me explain that I never intended to take a gap year, and yet now I am looking forward to it as a year full of opportunities, which also shouldn't cost me a thing. (If you're wondering how, there are further details in this post)

Hopefully with this blog, as well as keeping you informed as to what I'm getting up to, I might also persuade a few people that languages are a viable field of interest and not just for people of a certain stereotype(!). And like any hobbyist, I have time for lots of other things, for example I like to play jazz piano and complain about politics, so they might also feature a little on here.

Well, I hope this has given you a brief overview of my life so far. Stick around for (possibly) exciting insights over the next year! And for those who don't know me personally, here's a pic of me (right) and a close friend on our last day.
